Cabo San Lucas—at the very southern tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula—has been a vibrant hotspot for golf, fishing, water sports and fun of all kinds for many years. The area’s newest luxury development, Quivira Los Cabos, is certain to enhance the reputation of the destination and at the same time set a new standard of excellence for resorts in Mexico.

Set upon a private stretch of Pacific Coastline that offers more than three miles of pristine beachfront, Quivira is less than a mile from exciting downtown Cabo, renowned for colorful shopping, festive restaurants and pulsating nightlife. Cabo San Lucas’ marina is also the launch point for kayak excursions to the world-famous rock formation called Los Arcos, some of the best marlin fishing in the world and whale-watching day trips during winter season.

In addition to its perfect location complete with unfettered access to the ocean, Quivira’s main calling cards are two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses, two luxurious spas, miles of walking trails and two beach clubs. There’s no shortage of perfect ways to spend a day here.

An agreement between Nicklaus and Quivira was announced in October, 2008, and calls for two Nicklaus Signature golf courses and a Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in addition to a Nicklaus-branded oceanfront community.

“We are pleased to welcome Jack Nicklaus and his companies to the Quivira family,” said Quivira’s developer Ernesto Coppel. “This first-of-its-kind development and marketing collaboration will enhance Quivira’s position as one of the most sought-after luxury communities in Mexico and North America, offering a unique lifestyle and unprecedented golf experience in Cabo.”

The courses—one private and one resort—broke ground in late 2008, with the first set to open for play in early 2010. The land on which the courses are sited consists primarily of rolling sand dunes with extraordinary ocean views. Nicklaus’ routing calls for more oceanfront holes than any other development on the Baja Peninsula.

“Quivira is a piece of property that is unique on to itself,” Nicklaus said. “With its outstanding natural terrain and fantastic location, Quivira has all the elements to create a powerful blend of memorable golf experiences. I think the golf courses will be spectacular. The piece of ground is great, the ocean and the sand dunes remarkable.”

Quivira will also be home to a Jack Nicklaus Golf Club—one of only 25 worldwide. The clubs are located at a limited number of elite Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses in ideal markets around the world. Associate Members of the new club at Quivira will have complementary access to club amenities and tee times at the other Jack Nicklaus Golf Clubs, as well as access to a Nicklaus Home established on each property for use by Nicklaus, his family and other JNGC members worldwide.

But the Nicklaus courses and Club were not the only big news to emerge from Quivira in 2008. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company also announced plans for a 200-room hotel and 200 luxury residences on a three-mile stretch of secluded beach within the 1,850 acre Quivira residential resort community. The Residences broke ground in summer 2008, and plans are underway for The Ritz-Carlton Los Cabos, Quivira, planned to open in 2011.

“We have been searching for the perfect location in Los Cabos on which to build a hotel and residential complex,” said Simon F. Cooper, president and chief operating officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. “The Quivira site is unparalleled for its vistas, seclusion and beauty, and offers amenities that are prized by discerning Ritz-Carlton guests looking for a luxurious vacation or meeting destination.”

Proposed amenities include an 18,000-square-foot spa and wellness center, boutique shops, a selection of dining options complete with a signature restaurant, upscale retail space, separate outdoor swimming pools and whirlpools, and a fully equipped business center. With a 6,000 square-foot ballroom, 2,400 square-foot junior ballroom, three meeting rooms and a boardroom, the proposed hotel hopes to be the premier location for groups planning conferences and individuals hosting special events, weddings and social occasions in Los Cabos.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences will offer oceanfront and ocean-view homes on one-third to one-half acre sites. Spread across 158 acres of pristine oceanfront land, The Residences will offer an array of floor plans ranging from 4,430 to 6, 400 square feet, and will include sweeping views of the ocean and mountains, gracious living spaces, gourmet kitchens, and thoughtfully designed outdoor terraces, pools and courtyards.

Featuring Mexican hacienda-style architecture and interiors, which blends Spanish colonial with Mediterranean influences such as Tuscan architecture, the homes are designed to reflect the casual elegance of the Baja lifestyle.

Each residence will have a private terrace with an unobstructed view of the clear blue water where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. They will also be equipped with the latest technology in communication, security, comfort and convenience, with finishes for each home living up to the impeccable standards of The Ritz-Carlton.

With access to outstanding amenities, The Residences bring an unparalleled five-star caliber living experience to those who seek exclusivity, luxury, and comfort while remaining true the casual elegance of the Cabo lifestyle.

The addition of the Nicklaus and Ritz-Carlton components to an array of accommodations and amenities that include the multiple award-winning Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Holistic Retreat & Spa, two beach clubhouses, over 400 acres of natural conservation areas, more than 20 miles of walking, hiking and biking trails, outstanding botanical gardens, family sport parks, village center and more, Quivira can rightfully claim to be the hot spot in Los Cabos.
